Players of South Dakota Lottery games must be 21 years or older to buy or redeem tickets, which can be purchased at retailers throughout the state.
Proceeds from the lottery go toward funding K-12 education, state universities and technical institutes, reduction of owner-occupied and agricultural land, and developing natural resources.
Prizes of $100 and less can be redeemed at any South Dakota Lottery retailer, or by mail. Prizes more than $101 must be claimed at one of the lottery offices, located at Pierre, Sioux Falls and Rapid City. If mailing your winning ticket you'll need to fill out the details on the back of the ticket. Be sure to keep a copy of the front and back of all documents you send, and if it's a larger cash prize, it's advisable to send your claim by certified or registered mail.
Winners have 180 days after the date of the draw in which to make their prize claim. Unclaimed cash prizes are kept by the South Dakota Lottery, and are used to fund prizes.
It is advisable as soon as possible after purchasing your ticket you should sign the back of the ticket, otherwise anyone in possession of a winning ticket may file a claim.
Prizes are not exempt from Federal tax, and by law, for prizes more than $5,000 won by US citizens South Dakota Lottery must withhold 25% for Federal Income taxes. All prizes over $600 must be reported to Inland Revenue.
