Players of Montana Lottery games must be 18 years or older to buy or redeem tickets, which can be purchased at approximately 5,000 retailers throughout the state. Non-residents can win prizes, however all tickets must be purchased in person at an authorized lottery retailer.

In the 2008 fiscal year, 52% ($228.8 million) of tickets sales was returned to players in the form of prizes, while 25% ($11 million) went into the state's General Fund, for services such as education, health, public safety and more. By law a minimum of 45% of all sales must be paid as prizes.

Prizes of $599 and less can be redeemed at any Montana Lottery retailer, at the lottery headquarters in Helena, or by mailing the ticket, signed and with address on the back, accompanied by a claim form. Prizes $600 and over must be claimed at Montana Lottery's headquarters. If mailing your winning ticket be sure to keep a copy of the front and back of all documents you send.

Winners have 6 months after the date of the draw in which to make their prize claim. All money from unclaimed prizes is placed in the state's General Fund.

Montana Lottery advise that as soon as possible after purchasing your ticket you should sign the back of the ticket, plus add your address and social security number, as without these details anyone in possession of a winning ticket may file a claim.

Prizes are not exempt from Federal tax, and by law, for prizes more than $5,000 won by US citizens Montana Lottery must withhold 30% for Federal Income taxes. For non-US citizens the taxation is 30% for prizes over $599. Additionally, for prizes over $5,000, 10% State Tax is withheld.
