Players of Massachusetts State Lottery games must be 18 years or older to buy or redeem tickets, which can be purchased at more than 7,500 retailers throughout the state. Minors cannot buy tickets, but they can win prizes, which will be paid to the minor's guardian.

By law a minimum of 45% of lottery sales must be returned to players in the form of prizes - as at February 2010 that figure is closer to 69%. Approximately 23% of lottery sales was transferred to the state's Local Aid Fund, which is shared out amongst 351 of the state's cities and towns, used to fund whatever programs and services the cities and towns deem necessary.

Prizes of $600 and less can be redeemed at any Massachusetts State Lottery retailer, at lottery offices in Braintree, Springfield, Worcester, Woburn, New Bedford and Boston, or by mailing the ticket, signed and addressed on the back. Prizes $600 to $50,000, you can can be claimed any of the lottery offices, while for $50,000 and above you must visit the head office in Braintree.

Massachusetts State Lottery advise that as soon as possible after purchasing your ticket you should sign the back of the ticket, as if tickets are unsigned anyone in possession of a winning ticket may file a claim.

Prizes are not exempt from Federal tax, and by law, for prizes more than $5,000 Massachusetts State Lottery must withhold 25% for Federal Income taxes. Additionally, for prizes over $5,000, 5% State Tax is withheld.
