Players of Hoosier Lottery games must be 18 years or older to buy or redeem tickets, which can be purchased at approximately 4,000 retailers throughout the state.
In the period 1989 to 2009, Hoosier Lottery has returned more than $3.5 billion to the Indiana State Government, for the Build Indiana Fund, Teachers' Retirement Fund and the Police and Fire Fighters' Pension Relief Fund. These contributions represent 24% of ticket sales, while 62% of every dollar in ticket sales is returned to players in the form of prizes.
Indiana offers the multi-state Powerball game, and, as at February 2009, with its 36 jackpot winners, it leads the nation.
If you're lucky enough to win a Hoosier Lotto jackpot prize, you have 60 days to decide whether to take the prize as a lump sum or annuity. Typically, the lump sum prize would be approximately half the amount of the announced jackpot, less taxes. If jackpot winners don't let Hoosier Lottery know of their decision within the 60 days, the prize will be paid as an annuity.
Prizes are not exempt from Federal tax, and by law, for prizes more than $5,000 Hoosier Lottery must withhold 25% for Federal Income Taxes. Additionally, for prizes over $1,200, 3.4% State Tax is withheld.
