In the period 1975 - 2010, the Delaware Lottery has contributed $3 billion into the state's General Fund, which is used to to help fund education, beach and park maintenance, healthcare, crime and pollution prevention, and more. For the 2008/9 fiscal year, the amount contributed was $248 million. Players must be 18 years or older to buy or redeem tickets, which can be purchased in over 500 retailers throughout the state.
Prizes are not exempt from Federal tax, and by law, for prizes more than $5,000 Delaware Lottery must withhold 25% for Federal Income taxes. No state tax is payable by residents, however non-Delaware residents may have to pay state tax.
Prizes of $599 and less can be redeemed at any Delaware Lottery retailer, while prizes $600 to $5,000 can be claimed in business hours at Division of Revenue offices, located at Wilmington, Dover and Georgetown. Players may also mail their tickets in for redemption for prizes under $5,000 - making sure to clearly write your name and address on the back of the ticket. Prizes over $5,000 must be presented for claim at Delaware Lottery's headquarters in Dover.
It is advisable as soon as possible after purchasing your ticket to sign the back of the ticket, as if tickets are unsigned anyone in possession of a winning ticket may file a claim.
Winners have 1 year after the date of the draw in which to make their prize claim. Prizes are not exempt from Federal tax, and by law, Delaware Lottery must withhold part of the prize for Federal Income tax. Additionally, Delaware state tax is payable on all lottery winnings.
