$221.7 million Powerball jackpot win claimed
The two winners of the April 6 Powerball jackpot have come forward to claim the $221.7 million Powerball prize.
Indiana residents Darin Fox of Clarksville, and Todd Reardon of Jeffersonville, have taken friends, family, lawyers and accountants to the Hoosier Lottery offices and claimed their large novelty cheques, their newly-minted tickets to millionaire town.
The two men worked together as welders for eight years, and are now "retired welders". Todd's wife Tiffany has also decided to resign from her job as a record keeper at Humana Hospital.
As a rule they play the Hoosier Lotto game, but as the Powerball jackpot had grown so large they decided to throw a few dollars at a ticket. Good decision as it turned out. “We put $2 on Hoosier Lotto and $2 on Powerball and the rest has been a whirlwind,” said Fox.
Darin and Todd said they’ve always talked about what they would do if they won, but say that now that they have won they want to proceed slowly. Fox described winning as “overwhelming.”
“It’s been a whirlwind figuring all this out,” said Fox. “I’m used to living paycheck-to-paycheck.”
Plans for the money? The Fox family are looking to pick up a couple of new motor vehicles. For Darin, it's a new Ford F250 truck, for Tiffany Reardon, a new Black Ops Jeep Wrangler, and Darin's mother has set her sights on a convertible. Todd had recently purchased a new Jeep, so he's now able to pay that off.
As both men like to hunt, they also have in mind to buy some land on which to pursue their hobby.
“It’s been fun watching all this,” said Russell Fox, Darin’s father. “It’s one of those dreams that you don’t really think is going to come true.”
Darin disagrees with his father slightly on the issue. “Everybody plays to win,” said Darin Fox. “That’s why we buy tickets, right?”
The pair's winning ticket was purchased at the Circle K store at 820 Eastern Blvd in Clarksville, Indiana.
The $221.7 million prize figure was if taken a a 30-year annuity. Darin and Todd instead opted for a lump sum, amounting to $111.7 million before tax, and ending up in a take-home amount each of $40,002,146.87 after taxes.
This is the third largest jackpot win in Hoosier Lottery history, and keeps Indiana as the clear leader in number of Powerball jackpots won, with 37.
